Providing Financial Assistance
The City of Bowie proudly partners with the Main Street Bowie organization in offering an improvement grant, which provides funds for façade improvements and historic rehabilitation projects.
Improvement Grant Details and Guidelines
Downtown Improvement Grant Applications are considered throughout the year on a first come first served basis until funds are depleted. Grants are set up as a single payment reimbursement to property owners per building/business, and in some situations, tenants. No grant shall be awarded for work that has already been done or for work that has been covered by insurance. All submitted work will be reviewed based on the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and approved by the Main Street Design Committee before any eligible work may commence.
Applicants may apply for one of the following grants:
Façade Grants: Façade Grants are available on a 50/50 matching basis with a cap of $10,000.00. Façade grants focus on the exterior work of storefronts (visible to the public) on commercial buildings and upper story residential buildings. Examples of such improvements are awnings, window rehabilitation, brick repair, and exterior paint.
Sign Grants: Sign Grants are available on a 50/50 matching basis with a cap of $500.00. Sign Grants focus on signage that is appropriate for building in which it will be hung and focus on projecting signs, sign boards, pedestrian signage (which can include window signage, hanging signage, awning/canopy signage) for commercial buildings.
Mega Grant: Mega Grants are available on a 50/50 matching basis with a cap of $20,000.00. Mega Grants focus on the exterior work of storefronts (visible to the public) as well as interior capital improvements including electrical, fire suppression systems, and other permanent interior fixtures.
The Application Process
- Contact the Main Street Bowie office at 201-A Walnut Street or call 281-872-6246 to request an application. You may also download the application and submit to the Main Street Bowie office.
- Complete the application and agreement form and return them along with supplemental materials to the Main Street Bowie office for Design Committee review and approval.
- The applicant must be willing to work with the Main Street coordinator to ensure that design standards are met. The Design Committee may provide stipulations and or suggestions during the review process. All improvement grant applicants are eligible for a consultation with historic preservation architects at the Texas Main Street Center.
